Tango Residences

The book "Tango Lover's Guide to Buenos Aires" talks about "Where to Stay" (P. 7) in general terms.  The entries on this page are intended to provide the reader with specific recommendations, most of which fall under the category of "Tango Residences".  They generally provide a small number of guests with a more personalized experience and orientation to the tango world and to Buenos Aires. Some hosts accompany their guests to milongas, as needed.  Some guest houses include daily tango lessons in their price while others feature classes as an option as well as other ammenities. All guest houses have a common sitting and eating area for guests to share their experiences and to learn from each other, as well as studio space for classes and for practice.

  • La Casa de Maria Tango (www.mariatango.com ) is located in the historic barrio of Balvanera, a short walk to the Subte (line A) and an even shorter distance to Av Belgrano and buses that go towards the barrios of San Telmo and El Centro.  More importantly, is its proximity to many milongas.  The  home consists of 4 guest rooms, a common kitchen, a terrace overlooking parts of the city, a practice salon, and central heat and hot water.  The owner of this restored home is Maria Teresa.  She prides herself on her personalized service to guests.  This includes helping them plan their time, accompanying them to milongas, as needed, and securing the services of teachers who can communicate with guests.
  • Lina' Tango Guest House (www.linatango.com) is located in another historic barrio, San Telmo, near Subte Line C (Independencia stop on Av 9 de Julio). The area is replete with restaurants, cafes, galleries, shops, milongas, and near the well known Sunday antique fair on Plaza Dorrego.  The guest house consists of 5 rooms, most with private bath, an indoor dining/sitting room and an outdoor patio off a small kitchen, where meals can be eaten.  Lina lives on the premisis and maintains a well cared for space.
  • Caseron Porteno (www.caseronporteno.com) is located in a residential area of Palermo, just a short walk to the Subte line D (Olleros stop).  The inner courtyard of this guest house is quite large and sheltered.  The main street, just 2 short blocks away,  has restaurants, shops, and markets.  The guest house consists of 10 rooms with private bath, an indoor kitchen and eating space, and a well landscaped outdoor eating area.  The owners publish the well known and essential Tango Map Guide.

Individuals running tango guest houses who wish to be considered for inclusion on this page should write to the author at migrom@nyc.rr.com with the particulars of the locale including an address, website, and contact information.  Please note that additions to this page will be made after author visits residences and interviews owners.
